Somewhere in between my girls growing up and the grandchildren arriving on the scene, I started writing. Eventually I met my husband, we married and produced two daughters who then grew up and between them presented us with two gorgeous grandsons and one beautiful granddaughter. So what was I doing twenty years ago before I wrote books? Well, I did the all of the usual things, like growing up and attending school, finishing at secretarial college, which I hated, then spent the next several years wandering aimlessly from job to job. I know it isn’t a great average when compared with some authors but it sounds pretty good to me! Twenty years with almost forty books published or in the pipeline. So, hang on for a minute while I take this huge milestone in. Hi, my name is Michelle Reid and I’ve been writing for Harlequin Mills & Boon for the last twenty years, and the crazy part about it is that I only realised it had been twenty years while updating this page!

Bill Browder has been one of the loudest and most effective among that loud little handful clamoring for a new Cold War with Russia. Mark Twain warned us long ago about the “loud little handful,” shouting for war. Congress to pass the Magnitsky Act in 2012 which needlessly damaged the relations between the U.S. Nonetheless, on the dubious strength of that story, Browder has been able to lobby the U.S. Upon closer scrutiny however, his story doesn’t add up and demonstrably fails to stand up in a court of law. It follows four people who make up two eventual couples - Alice and Felix and on the other side of the country Eileen and Simon. Why? It’s not fresh or daring but just irritating, and I know you know how to use them. Oh, and before I forget in the rants to come - dear writers, please oh please do not skip dialogue tags in your writing. I don’t know whether that goes along with supposedly being a voice of an entire generation to which I belong - but awkwardness permeates everything, and my reactions fluctuated between boredom, periodic cringing and occasional spark of recognition and relatability - which unfortunately ended up buried under the awkward bits much too often. “Purposeful awkwardness” is how I can describe this book in just two words. Barry Seaman’s brilliant, rambling monologue covers subjects ranging from money to danger to food to stars (movie stars, star athletes, and the Milky Way) to the usefulness of the sun. In Roberto Bolaño’s novel, 2666, he devotes a dozen pages of the novel’s third section to a speech delivered by a character named Barry Seaman, a figure apparently based on the Black Panther leader and 60s activist Bobby Seale. I didn’t know that a writer could do that. Some of our most exciting and memorable reading experiences occur when we discover a story or novel, essay, play or poem that seems to us so original, so unexpected, so apparently unaware of-or unconcerned by-past models, conventions and clichés, and yet so steadily faithful to a guiding principle all its own that, regardless of how much else we may have read, we think: This is something new. |
